Round up at the Register-August 2015

Main Market Co-op is pleased to be able to offer modest donations to a variety of community nonprofit organizations through our "Round Up at the Register" program. Additionally, we commit to extending the opportunity of support to our shoppers and members by allowing them to round their total up to the nearest dollar, donating that excess to the featured community organization while spotlighting the organization in our store for the month.

Here is a little bit of information about our featured organization for August 2015:

KYRS Thin Air Radio

KYRS-Thin Air Community Radio is a non-profit, non-commercial, volunteer-powered, listener-supported, community radio station in Spokane, WA serving the area with unique programming for un-served and underserved populations. Heard on 92.3 & 88.1 FM and streaming 24/7 at kyrs.org, we provide a mix of news, views, culture and music often overlooked by other media, including the only locally produced environmental news, youth programs, LGBT, women’s issues and much more, all produced by volunteers from the community.

Mission

Thin Air Community Radio fills needs that other media do not, providing programming to diverse communities and unserved or underserved groups. Thin Air Radio provides a forum for neglected perspectives and discussions on important local, national and global issues, reflecting values of social, economic and environmental justice, peace, human rights, democracy, multiculturalism, freedom of expression and social change.

Thin Air’s arts, cultural, and music programming covers a wide spectrum of expression from traditional to experimental and reflects the diverse cultures Thin Air serves. Thin Air Radio strives for spontaneity and program excellence, both in content and technique.

Thin Air Radio’s goal is to build a strong, listener-supported community radio station that empowers people, especially ethnic minorities, low-income, and other marginalized groups, to strive for a more just and sustainable world.

A healthy community requires robust community media. Vibrant, relevant community radio that promotes local arts and culture attracts an innovative and intelligent workforce and encourages minorities and youth to have a stake in their community and to remain in the region. Thin Air Radio is in a unique position to help make Spokane a better place to live by providing the community a public setting to tell stories, share experiences and ideas, educate and inspire each other with arts and culture. KYRS builds community by providing a safe platform for cultures and issues often overlooked or under-reported in other media to get their message out to the public.
