Here is some information about Pine Meadow Farm:

The Pine Meadow Farm Center is a 32-acre teaching farm located between Spokane and Cheney. The Center is developing into a regional destination for experiential education centered around nutrition, farming, gardening and sustainable living skills tailored for audiences of all ages. The Center is a private, non-profit, all-volunteer organization and a sponsored project of the Seattle-based Cascade Harvest Coalition. The Center is dedicated to contributing to the general improvement of the regional food system through agricultural education. It partners with other educational institutions and resources in the region to collectively address important issues affecting the future of the region's young people, especially those of nutrition, food security, careers in food production and improving the regional food economy.
Our Education Program

According to Pat Munts, the Small Acreage Coordinator for Washington State University Extension and the Spokane Conservation District, the Spokane, WA region desperately needs an educational farm to teach sustainable farming skills to young, up and coming farmers. The Pine Meadow Farm Center is a new non-profit organization that has risen to the challenge.

The Center intends to use the land and the professional expertise of its staff and Board to develop farm-based educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. Current short-range plans for the education program include:

Serving as an outdoor classroom for agricultural students and interns from Washington State University, Eastern Washington University and area community colleges;
Developing curriculum and facilities for a live-in farmer apprenticeship program and curriculum through which students will experience immersion learning for two and three year terms. Graduates of the two-year program will be assisted in finding employment on area farms while graduates of the three-year program will be prepared to start their own farming operations in the Spokane region devoted to producing food for local consumption;
Converting a 5000 sq. ft. existing garden space on the farm to a Children's Garden with concomitant children-centered programming (READ MORE about the Children's Garden);
Expanding the farm's existing greenhouse propagation and bedding plant production to include propagation of annual and perennial varieties well suited for application in permaculture systems and developing educational programming around this aspect of the farm's activities;

Hosting on-going workshops (including informal “Family Days on the Farm”) with guest presenters on topics ranging from small-scale farm production, home gardening and simple living skills to courses such as applied permaculture or navigating the landscape of financial assistance available to farmers;

Developing and managing on-going public tours of farms and productive homesteads within a 75-mile radius of the farm geared towards farmers, gardeners, consumers and school children.

The Pine Meadow Farm Center is dedicated to developing this vision of an educational farm to its fullest potential. Of course, we need help to get this unique project going strong. We need financial assistance to maintain lease payments and pay expenses while we implement our strategic plan, prepare grant proposals and carry the farm through its first full growing season in 2013.

Your tax deductible contribution of any amount will help give us the firm footing we need to develop these valuable educational programs. With your help, the Pine Meadow Farm Center will become the focus of on-farm education in the Spokane region. You may send contributions to:
